Vonage Fax Fix

Buried in one of the Dell support forums, I found a fix for the “can’t adjust baud rate” problem with my Dell 1600n multifunction device. I still think it’s stupid that a company that relies on broadband technologies to drive its service has me setting a baud rate to 9600, but I must confess that it seems to have rather fixed my fax issues; I both sent and received a test fax, and it sees to work OK. I image there are other folks out there about to throw in the towel in trying to get their 1600n to work with Vonage, so I decided to post these instructions for you. Let me know if this is of help.

Instructions for changing Dell 1600n Baud Rate

  1. 1) Press Menu
  2. 2) Press #
  3. 3) Press 1, 9, 3, 4 on the number keypad (in sequence)
  4. 4) Press Menu again. At this point wait a few seconds and you will see the word “TECH” displayed on the LCD display.
  5. 5) Press Menu
  6. 6) Press Select
  7. 7) Press the < - or -> keys to navigate to “Modem Speed”
  8. 8) Press Select
  9. 9) Press the < - or -> keys to select the baud rate (options: 4.8, 9.6, 12.0, 14.4, 28.8,33.6)
  10. 10) Press Select once you have the baud rate you want displayed. Vonage suggests 9600, but many people have good luck with higher rates as well
  11. 11) Press Return
  12. 12) Press Return again. At this point you will be taken back to the main menu on the LCD display. It will still say “TECH”. You need to get out of this mode so you have normal access. Do the following.
  13. 13) Press Menu
  14. 14) Press #
  15. 15) Press 1, 9, 3, 4 on the number keypad (in sequence)
  16. 16) Press Menu

    2) press # (still shows: paper settings)
    3) press 1, 9, 3, 4 on the number keypad (Fax:1934)
    4) press Menu again (nothing happens/it will go back to the toner screen)

    What can I do?

I disagree with much of what you said. I have had vonage for about a year and will get rid of it after the penality phase ends after one year. That is provided that I can actually get them to cancel the account and they do not keep charging me even after I have disconnected.

    1. The price is very expensive when your home business calls do not connect and you lose customers.
    2. Call quality has been poor. Calls get dropped. Static and echos on the line. Voice mail does not work. People can hear me but I cannot hear them….Problems many times a week. And oh please, do not blame it on my VoIP provider, which is fine.
    3. Vonage took 3 months to port my number. I had them port my fax number because it was widely known by my customers. It took Vonage so long that AT&T closed my account and Vonage said the number could not be ported because it was not an active account. I had to reopen the account with all new Account fees with ATT just so Vonage could port it. Then half my clients could not fax me. Vonage IS the problem, not all of our fax machines. All of these machines cannot all fail and then work with other VoIP’s carriers on the same day.
    4. Vonage has NO tech support. You wait on the line for 30-60 minutes, the guy in India that cannot speak english, cannot or will not help you. You wait another 30 minutes for a supervisor and then they hang up on you. You e-mail Vonage and the e-mail bounces because their system is overloaded.
    5. Vonage now sells your name and e-mail to spmamers when they said that they would not do this when you signed up.

I still cannot figure out why I was such a fool to go with Vongae. Now I crusade against the company. I HATE VONAGE. People do stupid things.. they sign up for Vonage.

I agree with the above comments. Vonage is the worst.

  5. anonymouse Says:

vonage needs to improve their commercials. Either they make ones that are inexpensive or dont make any at all. Customers usually end up footing the bill….

  6. Rob C. Says:

Its just simply awful. We have used it in three locations with different types of connections and its just awful. I Hate Vonage.

  7. Aubriella Says:

I totally agree with the I hate Vonage! I waited on hold for 45 minutes to talk to tech support to see why my fax machine wasn’t working. They told me it was Epson’s problem not theirs. I called Epson’s tech support (who answered in less than 2 minutes) and they walked me through some stuff and it still didn’t work. So I went to my neighbor’s house and sent a fax with my machine using her land line and it worked fine. So I called Vonage back and after waiting on hold for another insanly long time I got a guy with an accent so heavy that I could hardly understand him and he had me redo all the stuff the the Epson guy had me do. He finally transfered me to advanced tech support and they will look into it and get back to me. I’m not crossing my fingers

VONAGE is an unscrupulous company with tactics of thugs. Vonage refuses to cancel my account after approximately two weeks of repeatedly trying to cancel my Vonage account by telephone and email.

VONAGE is an unscrupulous company and I refuse to do business Vonage. Vonage refuses to cancel my account after approximately two weeks of repeatedly trying to cancel my Vonage account by telephone and email. To end the phone conversation Vonage has repeatedly said Vonage computers are down and to call back.

  10. Alybadras Trawally Says:

I fully agree that Vonage is unscrupulous and dishonest and that it compounds unfair and deceptive business practices (punishable by law) with wanton and willful bad faith complaints handling.

Vonage added a second phone number to my account months ago, stealing over $240.00 from my charge account. When I realized it after several months, Vonage had the nerve to tell me that I was responsible for not having noticed it earlier and that it would not refund my money unless I signed a release of all claims and a confidentiality agreement.

I have wasted upward of 50 hours trying to extricate myself from their claws and have demanded damages for my time (being self-employed, I cannot afford to have my time tied into trying to right the wrongs committed by others and have, as a result, lost a lot of business). Vonage refuses to reimburse me and to pay any damages. It is high time Vonage dissatisfied consumers started a nationwide class action and that the outfit be shut down once and for all. Businesses have been closed for a lot less.

  11. Mike Says:

I agree with the above posts. Vonage is a criminal enterprise. I inquired about the service and agreed to $24.95/month and $6 extra for calls to South America. Towards the end of the call I was informed that the charge would be $40/month. I informed them that I did not want the service. However, they processed the order and billed my credit card.

I have phoned them and emailed them at least a dozen times and the refuse to cancel the service (even though I dont even have it). I guess my only hope is to cancel my credit card and notify Verizon not to switch my number.

  12. Tony Says:

Baud rate adjustment technique described above also works on the Samsung SCX-4725FN, which is essentially the same printer as the Dell, i.e. Samsung makes the 1600n for Dell.
